  The early 1970's saw some exciting developments. One was quite obvious, the other's not. The obvious breakthrough was the introduction of a compact, highly portable 8" telescope by Celestron - the "C8" Schmidt Cassegrain in 1970; followed closely by a 5" and 14". Then, perhaps unnoticed at the time, some smaller ads began to appear in Sky & Telescope from companies like Coulter, Parks and a newly formed Meade Instruments.
